Richard Barlow created Wejo, the leader in mobility intelligence, in 2014. Richard is both a serial entrepreneur and a veteran in data exchange, having already founded LeadX Ltd, the UK-centric fintech trading platform and claims management company. Prior to LeadX Richard held various other senior management positions, including CEO of Contact Centre Group Ltd from 2003 – 2005 and Technical Director of Eurocall Ltd from 2000 – 2002.
The idea for Wejo came from Richard’s personal interests (fintech and cars) and a recognition that automotive manufacturers had vast amounts of data about driving traffic patterns and trends which was not being harnessed properly. Seeing that car data was going to be at the centre of the nascent autonomous vehicle ecosystem, Richard appreciated that the initial opportunity for Wejo was going to be in providing data and insights to end-users and partners such as transport authorities, mapping and navigation businesses, traffic management firms and parking app developers.
Richard is always striving to see how Wejo can address and solve problems the automotive industry will face in the future using the invaluable insight provided by vehicles on the road. As the convergence of tech and mobility accelerates, he has positioned Wejo to be at the epicentre of a new wave of progress.
In 2019, Wejo received an investment of €91 million in a Series B round led by General Motors for a 35% stake in the company, moving Wejo into the top 10 UK tech start-ups to achieve the highest level of venture funding from outside the UK.
